Trial of accused USS Cole attack mastermind opens at Guantanamo
Jury selection began on Monday in the long-delayed trial of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the accused mastermind of the 2000 attack on the USS Cole warship that left 17 American sailors dead. Nashiri was captured in Dubai in 2002 and underwent harsh interrogations in a secret CIA prison before being transferred to the US military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba 20 years ago, where he has been held ever since. "Panel selection began" on Monday afternoon, Ronald Flesvig, spokesperson for the Office of Military Commissions, told AFP.
